What I’m reading this weekend:

This is not a book about the lost colony of Roanoke that is in Virginia. Which is why I picked this book up. Apparently there is a Roanoke, Kansas which is where this story takes place. And everyone in Roanoke wants to be apart of the Roanoke family. No one realizes the secrets the family has. No one realizes that Roanoke girls either run away or they die and Lane Roanoke soon realizes she has to make the decision herself.

As a teenager Lane goes to live with her grandparents in Roanoke after the passing of her mother. The story goes back and for in time between Lane’s present, where she returns to Roanoke upon the disappearance of her cousin and the past when Lane first goes to live with her grandparents.

If it were not for Matt D’Avella’s latest video, The Key to Happiness in a Distracted World I am not sure if I would have ever heard of this book. I’m such a sucker for just about anything Matt D’Avella promotes that I instantly went to Amazon and spent the $13 on the kindle book.

Ryan Holiday is the author of THE DAILY STOIC which I try and read every day. For those that are unfamiliar, THE DAILY STOIC is a quote each day of the year to “provide actionable tools and ideas to make you stronger, more resilient and happier”.

The idea behind STILL IS THE KEY is simple, “all of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone” (Blaise Pascal). Holiday believes that “stillness: to be ready while the world spins around you. To act without frenzy. To hear only what needs to be heard. To possess quietude – exterior and interior – on command.”

“To the ancient Stoics, if one could develop this stillness. This peace within themselves. The world could be at war and in complete chaos, but they could maintain their tranquility. They could think well, work well, and be well.”

STILLNESS IS THE KEY completes the trilogy of books that Holiday has written which began with THE OBSTACLE IN THE WAY and EGO IS THE ENEMY. Honestly, neither of which I have read (yet) but I do not believe that the books need to be read in any particular order.

Holiday believes that stillness is the key to being better at anything you do.

Completely by accident stumbled across this one while trying to find an interesting audio-book to listen to. And 2019 has been the year of true crime for me.

Israel Keyes… anyone? Anyone? Israel Keyes is said to be one of the most ambitious and terrifying serial killers in modern history.

Those are some bold statements. SIGN. ME. UP.

According to the synopsis, this man would fly to a city, rent a car, and drive thousands of miles in order to use his “kits”. Keyes would break into stranger’s homes, abduct his victims in broad daylight, kill and dispose of them and fly back home to his family and quiet life like nothing ever happen.

Let me know in the comments what you’re reading this weekend. 🙂
