Be Kind. That seemed to be the theme of my kids’ moving up ceremonies this year. I am not sure if that is the theme across the District but I found it interesting it was emphasized at not only the Elementary School level but also the Middle School.
It was laughable when I heard it at my daughter’s Elementary School ceremony. The Principal was anything but kind most of the time. And that was not just my observation.
When I heard the Principal call for kindness at the Middle School I actually stopped and listened. (Except when he quoted Oprah; can’t stand Oprah) But he did mention something I have heard before seemed to have forgot:
When you cannot find a kind person, be one.
His short speech was a reminder that being kind does not have to be large gestures and does not cost a thing. Being kind is really simple. It is a smile; it is being polite, having manners. Being kind is communicating. Being kind is being attentive to someone who is talking – putting your phone away.
